Gothic Revival Welsh Cupboard

Gothic Revival Welsh Cupboard

£1,150.00

A Victorian Welsh oak veneer glazed dresser or housekeepers cupboard, in the gothic revival taste. Its origin is a mid-Welsh chapel, then a country house in Presteign on the Herefordshire-Shropshire border. The upper section has a fixed, deep stepped cornice above three arched glazed doors with white ceramic handles, opening to a glossy paint sage green interior with removable shelving, flanked by recessed arched pillars. Additionally, there are five small frieze drawers with Ebonised banding and boxwood inlay. The lower section comprises of a full length frieze drawer with scrolled front, above eight short drawers and a central cupboard with shelf to interior, flanked by circular pillars, the sides panelled top and bottom, all above a shaped apron. The condition is generally good, with small areas of missing veneer, a loss of a small section of scrolled apron and some losses to the back plates of the drawer knobs. All structurally good, all drawers and cupboards open freely. A good example of country Welsh furniture of the period. Splits into sections for transportation, but is still a heavy and substantial piece of furniture.
